Emergent Behavior in Biological Systems
نویسنده
چکیده
Underlying many kinds of emergent behavior in biology are the critical changes in connectivity that occur, as links increase between the elements of a system. The behavior of systems with nearcritical connectivity is essentially chaotic and may be an important source of variety in biology. In most models of biological systems (for example, dynamical systems, cellular automata, state spaces) the patterns of connectivity between elements are isomorphic to directed graphs. These isomorphisms suggest that the above sources of emergent behaviour may be universal.

Emergent Behavior in Systems of Systems
As the development of systems of systems becomes more important in global ventures, so does the issues of emergent behavior. The challenge for systems engineers is to predict and analyze emergent behavior, especially undesirable behavior, in systems of systems. In this paper we briefly discuss definitions of emergent behavior, describe a large-scale system of system that exhibits emergent behav...
متن کاملSurprisingly Stochastic: Learning and Application of Emergent Behavior Using Interactive Simulations of Nano-Mechanical Biological Systems
Emergent behavior is pervasive in complex systems, and often produces surprising phenomenon that are challenging to understand and apply usefully, especially with regards to inter-level causalities. Here, we study engineering undergraduates’ capacity to understand and solve design problems concerning inter-level causalities in nanomechanical biological systems. To test user understanding and ap...
متن کاملExploring Emergent Behavior in Oscillatory Systems Using Agent-Based Modeling
The field of agent-based modeling is a relatively young field of research in which researchers define sets of agents and sets of rules that control their interactions with each other and the environment. The researcher then takes on the role of observer, watching and analyzing the behavior that emerges in the system. Because of their emphasis on emergent properties arising from simple interacti...
متن کاملEmergent properties of networks of biological signaling pathways.
Many distinct signaling pathways allow the cell to receive, process, and respond to information. Often, components of different pathways interact, resulting in signaling networks. Biochemical signaling networks were constructed with experimentally obtained constants and analyzed by computational methods to understand their role in complex biological processes. These networks exhibit emergent pr...
متن کاملEmergent Behavior and Mobile Agents
Naturally occurring multi-agent systems exhibit remarkable problem solving capabilities even in the absence of centralized planning. These systems exhibit complex, emergent behavior that is robust with respect to the failure of individual agents. Such systems are usually characterized by the interaction of a large number of simple agents that sense and change their environment locally. In this ...
